WE ARE EXPLORERS

We are Explorers!
This Term our topic is on EXPLORERS.
Recently we have been learning about
SIR EDMUND HILLARY
CAPTAIN JAMES COOK
&
NEIL ARMSTRONG

We integrated MATHS, TOPIC & ART and created
either a ROCKET SHIP or A BOAT.

We used
SHAPES and Different Art Materials like: Paint, Crepe paper, toilet paper roll, paper plate, pastels, straws and different coloured paper.

Rocket Ship
We used paper plates for our background and painted it black. We then added stars by putting white and yellow dots on it. After that we made our rocket ship. We looked at rocket ships and identified the different shapes we could see and we created our own rocket ship and added crepe paper at the end for effect.

Boat(Waka/ Vaka)
We learnt about the different patterns we have for each culture in our class. Kowhaiwhai (koru), Island Tapa cloth patterns including the MANULUA (our senior school).
We selected the different kinds of patterns we liked and used 3 different coloured pastels to create a personalised boat.

Buddy Maths

In Week 6 we BUDDIED up with our senior class RM 9 and did Maths together.
We add one group working on a word problem with Matua Fou and then another group with Whaea Marie doing Number Knowledge Activities.

Mixed abilities groups helps us learn from each other. We were all teachers and students teaching and learning together.

Things we learnt.
  • How to work well in groups
  • Share our ideas
  • Make sure we are not passengers who just sit there and do nothing, we need to help each other
  • LISTEN
  • If we don't understand we need to ask question until we do understand
  • BE RESPECTFUL

Number Knowledge Activities

  • Numbers before and after
  • Place Value Games
  • Identifying numbers between 0-1000
  • Making 10s
  • Shapes
  • Basic Facts

We partnered up and the "magic began." Thanks to Room 9 students our class were able to see how helpful we should be to each other, how to ask questions when we don't understand and respect others opinions and other interesting things.

Thank you Rm 9 :)
Looking forward to our BUDDY SPORTS SESSION

BUDDY CLASS

WE HAVE A BUDDY CLASS! YAY!

We had the opportunity to have buddy reading with the year 5 & 6's in Room 9. It was GREAT FUN we all enjoyed it. Room 9 came with a book of their choice and we all buddied up and they got to read us a story. They asked questions to test us and make sure we were paying attention. We all got together in the end and talked about our books and shared what we had learnt.

We ended off with a shared book "Dragons! Dragons! Dragons!
Thank you so much room 9 (http://potuiva.blogspot.co.nz/), we would love to do this again and hopefully we can buddy up one day for maths.

"The best way to learn is from each other" and this is an awesome example of the concepts "tuakana teina," & "AKO"- reciprocal learning.

PORTS OF AUCKLAND

WE ARE EXPLORERS!
Our Class is studying about EXPLORERS this term.
So far we have been learning about

SIR EDMUND HILLARY
JAMES COOK

We had the opportunity to go to the Auckland Maritime Museum.
We got to discover alot of awesome things.
Our favourite part of the trip was our boat ride because some of us have never been on a boat.
We learnt about the ports of auckland from early 1800s - 21st century  and in the museum we got to see different boats/waka/conoes of the great migration (different cultures migrating to New Zealand) and information on great explorers including Captian James Cook.
It was a Beautiful Sunny Day!
We joined learning and bonding with our parent helpers. Now to RESEARCH or Shall I Say EXPLORE MORE into Learning about our topic TUNE IN.
