OLYMPIC SYMBOLS



OLYMPIC SYMBOLS

We have been looking at the Olympic Symbols.
Here is what we learnt:

Olympic Motto: 
Citius
Altius
Fortius

This means Faster, Higher, Stronger

Olympic Rings
There are 5 rings they represent the 5 continents:
Asia, America, Africa, Europe, Oceania

Olympic Flag:
This flys in the country that is hosting the games until  the closing ceremony

The Torch:
This is lit in Greece, Olympia 100 days before the Olympic games start. People carry it around until the opening ceremony.

Medals
3 medals are given the the top 3 athletes in each event. 1st is gold, 2nd is silver, 3rd is bronze

Olympic Hymn
This was created by Spyridon Samaras and it was performed at the 1896 Opening ceremony Olympic Games.

Olive Branch
In the olden days these were the prizes instead of medals.

Mascot
Each country have a Mascot that represents them. NZ has the Kiwi.
